Built in 1925 by J. Fred Bippus, the LaFontaine drew guests such as Henry Ford, Amelia Earhart, John Dillinger, and Johnny Weissmuller, who enjoyed its Olympic-size swimming pool. It had an ice cream parlor called the Cat and the Canary, which featured caged singing canaries and a large, black porcelain cat for decoration. The hotel was closed in 1974, and converted into the LaFontaine Center, an affordable senior community. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984.
