In 1875 the Washington Hotel was built by Henry Plumeyer. After several additions, including a third story, it was combined with the Commercial Hotel and renamed the William Tell Hotel in 1920. It closed in the 1970s, although several business continued to operate out of the first floor. Demolished in 2009.In the spring of 1909, Sarah E. Smith purchased land for a new hotel. In September she hired the Don brothers of Morocco to build the two-story Arcade Hotel, which had been designed by H.P. Pike of Peru. Mrs. Smith was known to turn a garden hose on cars parked in front of the Arcade and flood them if they owners didn%u2019t have business in her hotel. The Arcade is now an apartment building.
