Opened by W.D. Jones on February 22, 1900, with almost one hundred rooms, many of which had their own bathroom. A telegraph office was located on the first floor. At an opening banquet on March 7, General Lew Wallace was scheduled to speak to the 120 guests, but was ill that evening. After Jones died in 1903, the hotel was run by his descendants for many years. It was destroyed by fire on December 31st, 1971, in which firefighter Captain William H. King lost his life. It is now the Marie Canine Plaza.
