This cover commemorates the 50th anniversary of the first transcontinental flight of 1911 by Calbraith Perry Rodgers. Between September 17 and November 5 of that year, he flew from Sheepshead Bay, New York to Long Beach, California, making dozens of stops, both intentional and accidental.Rogers%u2019 airplane, a Wright Model EX, was named the Vin Fiz after a grape soft drink produced by his sponsor, Armour and Company. He was accompanied on the ground by a special train of three cars, which included a sleeper, diner, and shop-on-wheels full of spare parts, as he flew above the railroad tracks. The feat made him a national celebrity. He was killed in a crash a few months later at an exhibition in California at the age of 33.Calbraith Rodgers in 1911.
