Built in 1863 as the Clifton Hotel, which was purchased by Dr. Herbert Bucklen in 1889 and extensively remodeled by adding more floors. Once completed, it was renamed the Bucklen Hotel. The fashionable building was demolished in 1973, and the site is now partly occupied by a small bank branch. The Hotel Read was located on West Marion St. In 1920 it was owned by Orian James Read, Sr., who was born in Rising Sun, Indiana in 1841, and died in Volusio, Florida in 1944. He and his wife Josephine lived in the hotel. She died in 1933, about the time the Read closed. The site is now a parking lot.
