after dark, a series of tall Airway Beacons were constructed around the country to guide them. Built by the Post Office and the Department of Commerce, each beacon sat atop a large concrete slab in the shape of an arrow (originally painted bright yellow), pointing in the direction of the flight path. The first beacons and arrows were constructed in 1924 and, in 1928, a Rocky Mountain beacon was immortalized in a 5-cent air-mail stamp. Nearly all the beacons were slowly decommissioned between the 1930s through the 1970s. Today, most of them have disappeared, but there is one remaining in Indiana%u2014hidden within the Clark State Forest, just west of the small town of Underwood. There are also three concrete arrows remaining in Indiana, two in Shelby County and a badly deteriorating one in Rush County, all pointing northwest toward Indianapolis.Beacon Tower in Scott County.Concrete arrow at Shelbyville Airport.5%u00a2 Beacon Tower stamp of 1928.
