Laughton was a Canadian, and learned about Spiritualism after moving to Detroit, where he became pastor at the First Spiritualist Episcopal Church in 1955. He often summoned spirits to speak through a trumpet, and at one of his s%u00e9ances at Camp Chesterfield the voice of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was clearly heard. In 1958, another medium at Camp Chesterfield, the English-born Spiritualist C. Dorreen Phillips wrote, %u201cIn Rev. James Laughton%u2019s s%u00e9ances there are many Indians. They are very noisy and appear to have great power...The little guides, or doorkeepers, are usually Indian boys and girls [who act] as messengers who help to locate the spirit friends who wish to speak with you.%u201d
