Chaney took up Spiritualism after his parents became believers, and performed as a medium at Camp Chesterfield for many years. He took up spirit photography when told in a s%u00e9ance to take his handkerchief and hold it, unfolded, over his solar plexus. After a few minutes, a picture of a young man appeared on the handkerchief. He also specialized in having spirits speak through trumpets, reading the words written on papers inside envelopes, performing conventional readings, and healings. He and his wife, Erlene, met upon the front steps of a small cottage at Camp Chesterfield in 1947, and married three months later. In 1951, they founded the Astara Foundation in Upland, California to be a center for all religions, a school of the Ancient Mysteries, a fraternity of all philosophies which unite us as one in the Infinite, an Institute of psychic research, and to perform research into life before and after physical incarnation.
