This Aldebaran-Class Cargo Ship was launched in 1939, and named the Flying Cloud at the Federal Shipbuilding and Drydock Co. in Kearny, New Jersey. She displaced 10,850 tons, had a length of 459 ft., a beam of 63 ft, and had a single propeller with a 6,000 hp. diesel engine. The ship was renamed Santa Catalina in November 1940, when she was acquired by the Navy on June 19, 1941 and commissioned as the USS Jupiteron August 22. 1942 under Lieutenant Commander Duncan S. Baker. The USS Jupiter participated in numerous World War II and Korean War campaigns. She was eventually sold for scrap on March 12, 1971.The USS Jupiterreplenishing the USS Lexington aircraft carrier with underway in 1956.
