                                    This was the first of two United States ships named the USS Jupiter. She was laid down on October 18, 1911 at Mare Island Navy Yard in Vallejo, California and launched on August 14, 1912 as a collier on April 7, 1913, under Commander Joseph M. Reeves. After being decommissioned on March 24, 1920, she was converted into the U.S. Navy%u2019s first aircraft carrier at the Norfolk Navy Yard in Portsmouth, Virginia, then recommissioned as the USS Langley on March 20, 1922.She was again modified and reclassified as Seaplane Tender USS Langley on April 11, 1937, and was lost to enemy action on February 27, 1942 near Java.After being converted into the aircraft carrier USS Langley, shown in February 1937.
