The first was produced on a flat-plate printing press, and the second, one year and six months later, on a rotary press. They can be distinguished because they have different number of perforations per inch and the later stamp is one millimeter wider. They were sufficient for mailing a one-ounce letter via Air Mail. When the postal rate was raised from 5%u00a2 to 8%u00a2, a new yellow version of the Winged Globe stamp was released. Just under two years later, when the rate was lowered to 6%u00a2, an orange version was created. The 30%u00a2 stamp was released for regular transAtlantic airmail service, which began May 20, 1939 on Pan American Airways%u2019 Clipper service between America and Europe.
