Pan-American Zeppelin Series1930This set of stamps was issued exclusively for use on mail carried by the Graf Zeppelin, primarily on its maiden flight in May 1930, which flew from Europe, to South America, to North America, then back to Europe. Besides being used for postage, the stamps were also intended as a gesture of good will toward Germany. The 65%u00a2 stamp was for a postcard to be carried oneway, the $1.30 stamp for a letter carried one-way, and the $2.60 stamp for a letter carried on the full route. The stamps were expensive luxuries during the Great Depression and not many were sold. In fact, the cost of all three stamps was equivalent to a workman%u2019s wages for an entire week. After being on sale for only 5 weeks, they were withdrawn on June 30, 1930. Of the combined total of 3,260,000 stamps printed, more than 90% were destroyed. As a result, they are today among the scarcest and most coveted United States issues. These Plate Number Blocks are reproductions. If they were genuine, they would have a retail value of approximately $15,000 in 2020.Graf Zeppelin over the AtlanticC13%u2014April 19, 1930Graf Zeppelin and GlobeC15%u2014April 19, 1930Graf Zeppelin between ContinentsC14%u2014April 19, 1930
