Lindbergh Issue1927Spirit of St. LouisC10%u2014June 18, 1927Charles Lindbergh made his historic non-stop flight from New York to Paris on May 20-21, 1927. Almost immediately, the public requested that he be honored with a postage stamp%u2014and within weeks the Post Office did just that. The new 10%u00a2 stamp was issued for 1/2 ounce letters traveling any distance. It was the first time a living person was honored on a United States stamp.Spirit of St. Louis, Booklet PageC10a%u2014June 18, 1927To increase the use of the Air Mail, the Post Office lowered the postage rate to just 5%u00a2 per ounce on August 1, 1928. Because early Air-Mail pilots flew without instruments, radios, or other navigational aids, a series of tall Airway Beacons, like the one pictured on this stamp, were constructed around the country to guide them. The first beacons were erected in 1924. They were slowly decommissioned between the 1930s and the 1970s.Air Beacon Issue1928Airway Beacon on Sherman Hill, WyomingC11%u2014July 25, 1928
