Universal Postal Union Series1949Anniversary of Powered Flight1949, 1953Wright Brothers and their FlyerC45%u2014December 17, 1949Because Post Office policy prohibited stamps honoring living persons, the Wright Brothers could not be so honored until after Orville%u2019s death in 1948 (Wilbur had died in 1912). A stamp was issued the very next year, on the 46th anniversary of their first powered flight at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina.Four years later, on the 50th anniversary of the Wright%u2019s historic flight, another anniversary-of-flight stamp was issued.
