The Jupiter stamp was released to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the first official Air Mail flight, which involved carrying mail by the balloon Jupiter from Lafayette to Crawfordsville, Indiana. The stamp honoring the 3rd Pan American Games, which was held in Chicago, Illinois in August, 1959, was issued in a 10%u00a2-denomination for the Air Mail rate to Central and South America.These stamps mark the admission of the Territories of Alaska and Hawaii to the Union as its 49th state and 50th states. Alaska became the country%u2019s largest state, and Hawaii America%u2019s only island state.
