They were convicted of espionage in 1951, and executed in 1953 in the Sing Sing Correctional Facility%u2019s electric chair. Their case was quite controversial at the time, and many people (including their two sons) doubted their guilt. However, after the fall of the Soviet Union, a great deal of information about their spying was declassified. Such as Julius's role as a courier and recruiter for the Soviets. Ethel was considered an accessory who helped recruit her brother, David Greenglass, into the spy ring. It was only after these documents were released, that the full extent of their crimes came to light.
