                                    Nuclear Weapons of the Atomic AgeReduced facsimile of the back of the Phillip Morrison photograph on previous pageMorrison worked on the Manhattan Project with George Kistiakowsky to develop the explosive lenses required to detonate an implosion-type nuclear weapon. He actually transported the core of the first atomic bomb to the Trinity test site in the back seat of a Dodge sedan. Later, he helped load the atomic bombs aboard the aircraft that dropped them on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. After the war, he traveled to Hiroshima to assess the damage, then became a champion of nuclear nonproliferation. He helped to found the Institute for Defense and Disarmament Studies and remained academically active throughout the 1950s. He was also known for writing popular science books and articles, and in 1987 he hosted a sixpart miniseries on public television titled, %u201cThe Ring of Truth: An Inquiry into How We Know What We Know.%u201d Morrison died in his sleep in 2005 at the age of 90.
