The first hotel on the site was a 3-story wooden structure built by Dr. William Bowles in 1845. By the time former Indianapolis mayor Thomas Taggert acquired the property, after the turn of the 20th century, it was a major resort. The hotel went into decline after the Great Depression, but was revived as the French Lick-Sheraton Hotel in 1964. Unfortunately, it continued to decline until it was restored as the French Lick Resort in 2005 by the Cook Group.
