Built in 1922 as a multi-use retail and hotel building. Demolished in 1992. On March 15-16, 1925, Indiana Ku Klux Klan leader David C. Stephenson was staying in the Indiana. With him was Madge Oberholtzer, whom he had kidnapped in Indianapolis, then tortured and raped in the hotel. While David was sleeping, Madge took several mercury bichloride tablets she%u2019d purchased at a drug store. Stephenson was arrested shortly after her death, on kidnapping, rape, and murder charges, and was sentenced to life in prison.
