Nuclear-EraPhotographsThis section consists of actual gelatin-silver photographs that were produced between the 1940s and the 1960s. All relate to people and places that were very much in the news during the years after nuclear weapons were first developed. Most of the smaller photographs in this collection were likely produced as souvenirs for servicemen to commemorate their time in World War II. These differ from Real Photo Post Cards (RPPCs) because, though they are the size of post cards, they do not include printed information on the back showing a place for a stamp, address, or message. The larger photographs are mostly press photos created to illustrate newspaper or magazine articles. They were generally produced by professional photographers for general release, and were carefully composed to capture distinctive traits of their subjects. For those photographs with relevant information on their reverse sides, scans of their backs are included.
