Construction began in 1870, but the project was languishing when a fire nearly destroyed the unfinished building in 1874. It was completed and opened in 1880, yet suffered another extensive fire in 1885, and was rebuilt again. It was razed in 1933 to make room for a parking garage, which was demolished in 1986. First Indiana Plaza was then been built on the site.
