Many of the country%u2019s leading fliers and airplane manufacturers converged on South Bend between August 27 and 31, 1929 for an automobile and airplane show at the Municipal Airport. Airport Director John B. Kuespert, who was also the Assistant Chief of Police, was in charge of the festivities, and announced there would be no admission charge for the public to attend, and plenty of parking was available. Besides viewing the latest models and types of airplanes and automobiles on display, the event included stunt flying, parachute jumps, refueling tests, day and night passenger flights, a modelairplane show, and glider contests.On the first day of the meet, flyers in a crosscountry National Air Race landed at Municipal Airport, ate lunch, then took off at 11:30 am for Cleveland, Ohio. They had started flying in Portland, Oregon, and South Bend was the last official stop before the race%u2019s finish line in Cleveland.Cachet on back of coverFor collectors, covers were available with a cachet in a different color for each of the five days.
