                                    In 2001, the United States Congress created the U.S. Centennial of Flight Commission to coordinate activities across the nation which would commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Wright Brothers first powered flight, which took place on December 17, 2003 at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. As a part of the multi-year celebration, the Postal Service authorized a special pictorial cancellation for use by Mooreland, Indiana at a nearby, but temporary, Wilbur Wright Birthplace Station, for one day%u2014Saturday, June 21, 2003%u2014for the Centennial of Flight Festival at the Wilbur Wright Birthplace Museum. This postcard, published by the Smithsonian Institution%u2019s National Air and Space Museum, contains that special cancellation. Reduced facsimile of back below. The Centennial of Flight Festival at the museum featured the dedication of a nine-foot limestone monument to Wilbur, hot air balloons, and Wright Flyer demonstrations.
