National Air Mail Week Covers of Indianawith the stamp%u2019s release. In addition, the Post Office set up a temporary postal station at the event to cancel First Day Covers. Most of the covers mailed during NAMW were posted with this new stamp, but a variety of other stamps were also used, depending on local availability and personal taste.Covers and CachetsEvery city and town in the country, no matter its size, was asked to come up with its own cachet, which could contain a commemorative design, and perhaps a slogan. It%u2019s been estimated that, of the 45,000 post offices in the country, nearly 10,000 produced cachets, many the result of local contests. Some designs were made into rubber stamps, other cachets were printed on envelopes, and some were stickers. And they were used for Air Mail covers all during the week-long celebration. Most bragged about their community%u2019s beauty, history, progressivism, or some other positive claim to fame. Only two cachets were officially authorized by the Post Office Department%u2014the ones for Kitty Hawk, NC and Dayton, National Air Mail WeekPostmaster James A. Farley, sitting with 150,000 letters and covers mailed to him during NAMW.
