On the day it opened, two patients were admitted, and anemergency appendectomy was performed by a local physician. Even after being expanded,it couldn%u2019t keep pace with the needs of the area, and it closed in 1965 when a new hospital opened.For a while it housed students from St. Joseph College, then was razed to become a parking lot.Bartholomew County Hospital%u2014%u2014Columbus, Indiana%u2014%u2014Established 1917Originally a 32-bed %u201cabsolutely fireproof %u201d facility, the hospital underwent major expansions in1945, 1949, 1953, and 1959 to a capacity of 181 beds.
