The Indiana State Board of Health operated out of several different buildings before taking over the first two floors of the State House Annex. There it remained until 1939, when its own new building was erected on the Indiana University Medical School campus. Quickly outgrowing that location, it settled into another new building in 1949 where it stayed until 2010. When that structure was demolished, it moved to a new location near downtown Indianapolis. Medical Education In the early 1800s, a person%u2019s medical education often began by working with an older, well established doctor. Some of these apprentices then went on to attend medical school and obtain a degree. Others simply set up shop and began treating patients. This led to such enterprising individuals as Dr. William Lindsay whose 1831 ad in the Richmond Palladium stated he was now in the practice of %u201cPhysic, Surgery, and Midwifery.%u201d It also announced that he ran a drugstore selling paints, dye stuffs, and %u201cJapan Varnish for boots, shoes and harness.%u201d The ad concluded with, %u201cA few young men who are qualified, will be taken as medical students.%u201d Catering to seekers of a short-cut medical education, like those who might have responded to Dr. Lindsay%u2019s advertisement, the Christian
