Aging Gracefully573and how they displayed a bewildering array of seemingly unrelated symptoms. It also pointed out that in prior years, such people were often regarded as mentally ill.Dr. Miller was one of several professionals to help dispel the mental-illness diagnosis through relentless research into the condition. As a diagnostic tool, she designed the Quick Environmental Exposure and Sensitivity Inventory (QEESI), which had 50 questions related to common triggers of chemical sensitivities. Miller found that 6% of the people visiting a doctor for a chronic health condition had high scores on both TILT and QUEESI. And another 15.8% were moderately affected. This 2013 article covered some of the early theories as to what was occurring inside the bodies of sensitive individuals, but noted that it was still a controversial diagnosis. Now retired, Miller authored over 70 articles in her career, and was instrumental in founding the TILT Research Program for Chemical Intolerance at the University of Texas (tiltresearch.org) to study chemical sensitivities, and provide help for patients.I actually met Claudia Miller in 2002, when we were both on an advisory board sponsored by the American Lung Association. It was not long after Lynn%u2019s Creating a Healthy Household book was published, and I gave Dr. Miller a copy, which she was quite pleased to receive. I just didn%u2019t want to waste my time on something I considered below my standards. It was during the time my interests were transitioning from healthy houses to photography, and I never bothered to follow up with the Lung Association to see what guidelines were actually promulgated. But I do know their Health House program eventually ceased to be. After we had finished reading the two Discover articles, I told Lynn that I had a thought. I said that when a person exhibited symptoms of TILT (or MCAS or MCS) it was assumed that some-
