FIRST DAY COVERSThree different first-day cancellations were used by the New Haven, Connecticut Post Office. One is distinguished by a larger roundel. The two with the smaller roundels are only slightly different from each other. One has a pair of horizontal bars above and below the words FIRST DAY OF ISSUE, with a very short bar at each end of the words. (These bars are called the killer.) The other version is similar, but lacks the two short bars. The captions for the covers herein contain the alphanumeric designation (e.g., M-23) found in Mellone%u2019s Specialized Cachet Catalog of First Day Covers of the 1940s. Those not listed have the designation NIM (Not In Mellone%u2019s). Where available, there are two examples%u2014one with a single stamp and one with a block of four. Other variations are also included.
