A Century of Progress %u2022 Vintage PostcardsNovelty Postcards, WoodenWooden postcards were first produced in the early 1900s as novelty items, often for exhibitions such as the 1904 Saint Louis World%u2019s Fair. Many were machine-made, with the design stamped and burned into a thin piece of wood. In the 1930s and 40s they often featured a printed design in one or more colors. Being heavier than a standard postcard, they required the one-ounce letter rate for mailing, which between 1930 and 1958 was 3 cents. These wooden postcards from the Century of Progress Exposition each measure 23/4%u201d by 45/8%u201d which is smaller than a standard postcard, and they each have a divided back. They are unlike most wooded postcards in that they have bas-relief designs.Hall of ScienceFort DearbornAdministration BuildingPostmarked Chicago, August 28, (year unreadable)
