On July 1, 1859, just before his Jupiterflight in Lafayette, John Wise flew his balloon Atlantic an incredible 809 miles from St. Louis to Henderson, New York, where he crash landed during a storm. Thus, even if he had never flown the Jupiter from Lafayette to Crawfordsville, he would have been notable for his pioneering work in ballooning. Wise made more than 400 flights during his lifetime, and developed a number of important innovations in balloon design. He also published two highly respected books, System of Aeronautics, and Through the Air: A Narrative of Forty Years' Experience as an Aeronaut(title pages below). Wise and his balloons have been depicted on a variety of stamps and covers. This section contains covers commemorating a variety of events that contain either an actual Balloon Jupiter stamp, the stamp%u2019s image, or a likeness of the balloon. Also included are postage stamps from other countries that commemorate either Wise or one of his balloons.
