Signed by Greta J. Dixon who was appointed Acting Postmaster at Kentland on May 31, 1955, and Postmaster on July 20, 1956. She served until 1977, and died in 1995 at the age of 77. No Backstamp. While an airport near Kentland was first proposed after World War II, it wasn%u2019t until October 18, 1975 that the dream was realized with a formal dedication at 10:30 on that Saturday morning. The plans for the new facility were begun in November 1972 when area businessmen and aviation enthusiasts met at the Colonial Inn. The result of that meeting was a successful fundraising campaign, to which donations of material and labor were added. While state money had been used in the past to expand and upgrade airports in Indiana, Kentland%u2019s airport was the first to use such funding%u2014in the amount of $120,000%u2014for the initial construction. An additional matching amount of $120,000 was raised locally, with donations arriving from the neighboring communities of Brook, Fowler, Goodland, and Morocco, as well as from Sheldon and Watseka, Illinois.Because of the cold weather, the outdoor ceremony was held inside Holly Hanger. Along with numerous local dignitaries, the dedication was attended by Lieutenant Governor Robert Orr, Henry Kazimieyer, Director of Indiana%u2019s Aeronautics Commission, State Senator James Gardener, and State Representative James Jontz. During his speech, Orr said there would soon be an announcement about the construction of a new industrial plant in the area, a direct example of how a new airport can attract businesses. The ceremony was accompanied by displays covering aviation topics related to business, instruction, sport, and agriculture. Plus there was a jet engine from Purdue, several home-built aircraft, and a Civil Air Patrol booth for the public to peruse. Free airplane rides were to be offered, but because of the inclement weather, they were postponed until October 26.
