by cartoonist Paul McGeHeeI discovered this series of postcards in mid-2022, about two years after I began a collection of Indiana%u2019s Large Letter postcards. Because Paul McGeHee had shown such creativity in producing them, I decided to start a collection. But because they didn%u2019t fit with my Indiana postcards, they are included here.Born in 1950, Paul McGeHee of Salem, Oregon was a cartoonist. He formed a postcard company called Visual Vacations, then filed for a Trademark of its logo on August 25, 1987. His Trademark for %u201cpostcards%u201d was granted the next year (registration #1491105). McGeHee%u2019s cards were of the Large-Letter variety that were popular from the 1930s through the %u201850s%u2014but they did not celebrate the usual cities and states. His postcards conveyed greetings from our solar system%u2019s planets and other astronomical locales%u2014even from %u201cNowhere in Particular%u201d and %u201cHades.%u201d According to his friend and fellow cartoonist, Justin Greene, %u201cWith his constant companion Woofy, he made several cross-country trips in his VW bus (%u2018The Roving Doghouse%u2019).%u201d Green also noted that McGeHee commissioned him, and a few other artists, to create postcard designs that complimented his own. In commenting on McGehee%u2019s cards, April Whitt of the Adler Planetarium once said, %u201c...they are colorful, amusing, and mostly accurate. I%u2019m planning to use them with kids in our Space Explorers program. They might make clever announcements about upcoming sky shows, or neat note cards, or give inspiration for posters, or provide a smile on an off day.%u201dA mere two years after starting Visual Creations, McGeHee died in 1989, %u201cprematurely from too much exposure to the sun earlier in his carefree youth,%u201d according to Green, who was with him when he passed. He was only 39 years old. This series of postcards originally sold for 50%u00a2 each, or $7.50 for the set. Additional sets could be purchased for only $5.00. For the retail trade, McGeHee offered a wholesale price of $4.00 per set, or $3.60 per set in dozen quantities.
