Souvenir SheetsThe First Day Covers on this page, and the next two, contain miniature sheets (or sheetlets). These were released as souvenir sheets by the Post Office in conjunction with specific events. The sheetlet on the cover below was issued for the 3rd International Philatelic Exhibition in New York, which was the city designated for the first-day of issue. It was cancelled on May 9, 1936, (the first day) but in Washington, DC rather than New York. The two souvenir sheets on the next page are from a series of United States National Parks stamps. They were released in 10 different denominations, and three of them were used on souvenir sheets, the 1-cent, 3-cent, and 10-cent, of which I have the larger and smaller denominations. The cover with the 1-cent Yosemite stamp contains a half-sheetlet, which was issued in conjunction with the Trans-Mississippi Philatelic Exposition and Convention. It was released on October 10, 1934.The 10-cent souvenir sheetlet was issued in conjunction with the 43rd Annual Convention of the Society of Philatelic Americans. It was first released on August 26, 1937 in Asheville, NC, and honors the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The top sheetlet on the third page contains facsimiles of the first two United States postage stamps, which had values of 5 cents and 10 cents. It was issued on the 100th anniversary of those two stamps, on May 19, 1947, and was released in New York. This cover was given to me by Pete McNeely. The last sheetlet marks the 5th International Philatelic Exhibition, which was held in New York. It was cancelled on April 28, 1956.
