Logansport%u2019s Carnegie Library was formally opened on September 24, 1904. An elevator was installed in 1920, a mezzanine in 1922, and in 1939 funds left to the library by Mrs. Ruth Winters were used to remodel the interior and add a balcony. All was going well for the library%u2014until a devastating fire on St. Patrick%u2019s Day in 1941, which destroyed the building and 25,000 books.Just two weeks later, on April 1, a group of 130 local citizens formed an organization called Friends and Patrons of the Library, and Robert J. Arthur was named its chairman. Their goal was to build a new library. On May 9, 1941, Ferd Burgman, the group%u2019s treasurer, reported that a proposed new building would cost $82,000, of which about a third would come from insurance, and the remainder would require a bond issue. On February 3, 1942, the bond was approved by the city school board, and the low bidder, A. J. Wolf Construction, was awarded the building contract.About eight hundred people attended the special dedication program on September 25, 1942 for what turned out to be a $105,000 structure.A library annex was built in 1982 on adjacent land that was formerly occupied by the Maiben Building. And another addition was erected in 2002 with a curved staircase, skylight, fireplace, a children%u2019s reading section, and a new computer section. A later renovation added additional community meeting space.Logansport Public Library%u2014%u2014Logansport, IndianaErected in 1942 to replace the Carnegie Library that was destroyed by fire, and continues to serve as a library.Non-Carnegie Public LibrariesFlora Hoosier Democrat, Flora, Indiana, USSeptember 26, 1942, Page 1https://newspaperarchive.com/other-articles-clipping-sep-26-1942-3552018/
