Now the Haggar College Center.St. Mary%u2019s College was founded in 1844 by the Sisters of Holy Cross who had come to America from LeMans, France. In 1903, the college got its first official library which was located in Holy Cross Hall. It was the work of Mother Pauline, who also supervised the construction of the second library in LeMans Hall in 1925. When that library was deemed too small, the sisters sent out a plea to the school%u2019s graduates to support a brand new library. Five years later the Alumnae Centennial Library (above) was dedicated in 1942 to honor the centennial anniversary of the founding of the Sister%u2019s order in France and all the college%u2019s alumnae. The library was designed by Jens Frederick Larson, and erected by Thos. L. Hickey Builders, Inc., who constructed a total of nine buildings on the campus. It had brick walls with a slate shingle roof, and was strategically located on Lake Marian, just north of Marian island. The Alumnae Centennial Library was much admired and its design reflected the architecture and styles of the Saint Mary%u2019s tradition. It served the needs of the college very well, and in 1963 it was rated in the top 5 percent of all college and university libraries in the country. However, as the enrollment increased over the years, the library was unable to meet the demands of the growing campus. By 1975, it was obvious that a new library was necessary. It took seven years of planning and fundraising for the new Cushwa-Leighton Library to become a reality. The two major patrons were Margaret Cushwa, a 1930 alumna, and Mary Lou Morris Leighton, a member of Saint Mary%u2019s Board of Regents. The dedication was in 1982, and the Alumnae Centennial Library was repurposed into Haggar College Center the next year.Besides serving as the student union, the Haggar College Center housed the Shaheen Bookstore and a snack bar. It is now home to administrative offices and the Information Technology department.
