Non-Carnegie Public LibrariesThe sculpture atop the 1893 library building was cast in 1892 and mounted over the new building%u2019s front entrance. It consisted of three figures, which corresponded to the name of the sculpture, which was %u201cArts, Sciences and Letters.%u201d In 1917, after the new Central Library was completed, the sculpture stayed on the old library building, which then became the headquarters for the Indianapolis Public Schools. The school corporation continued to use the building until 1967 when the structure was demolished. At that time, the sculpture was taken down and moved to Crown Hill Cemetery, where it was subjected to the ravages of time and vandals. When the large addition to the Indianapolis Central Library was underway in the early 2000%u2019s, the sculpture was retrieved from Crown Hill and sent to Detroit for restoration, and for the replacement of various pieces which had been damaged or stolen. Once the work was completed, the sculpture was returned to the newly expanded and renovated Central Library where it continues to reside above the north entrance.
