35dy bars, were filled with receipts and paperwork from decades and decades of running the business. On the floor, were a pair of cylinder heads for an early Ford V-8, as well as the wheel-less frames of a bike and a unicycle.Back downstairs, I looked again behind the dusty woodand-glass counter that had been Ivan%u2019s command post. Ready for use, were at least three tattered fly swatters, a pair of greasy flashlights, and several dull pencils. Tacked to the front of a cabinet hung an official Ivan%u2019s MarathonService calendar, complete with a miniature rendition of DaVinci%u2019s Last Supper. All its months had been torn off, except November and December 1967. Next to it, was a yellowed Coca-Cola daily calendar, helpfully informing onlookers that the %u201ccurrent day%u201d was December 14, 1974. Inches away, lay a worn phone book with spring flowers and May 1976 printed on its cover. It was clear to us that Time had a different character, a different effect, a different way of functioning, inside Ivan%u2019s than in the rest of creation. This was confirmed for us on a most personal level. When we entered 100 Pearl Street, we thought we%u2019d be here for 20 minutes or so. But as we stepped outside, and locked the door, John glanced at his wristwatch. %u201cLynn,%u201d he said slowly, with more than a bit of surprise in his voice, %u201cwe%u2019ve been here for two hours.%u201d Ivan%u2019s Service%u2014Thorntown, Boone Co.
