95Firefighters%u2019 memorial%u201cThe splendid monument to commemorate the memory of the Volunteer Fire Department of New Albany, has been completed, and was set up on Friday afternoon in Fairview Cemetery. It will perpetuate the memory of 800 men who served the Volunteer Fire Department in the years 1825 to 1865. The monument is 15 feet 9 inches in height from the base to the top of the surmounting figure. It is of Bedford light colored stone, and all the work upon it was done in New Albany. It is a work of genuine art in sculpture, being especially elegant in its bas reliefs and in the distinctness of touch and finish in every elaboration. The material is indestructible. This handsome monument is surmounted by the figure of a Volunteer Fireman, in the uniform of the old Volunteer days, holding in his arms a child rescued from a burning building, and rushing to safety with it. The figure is a work of genuine art, and rises above the cap of the shaft, which is also a splendid specimen of art. On the West side of the shaft, just under the cap, is an old-time hand engine resting on a base cut out of the stone and the base bearing the legend%u20141825-1865%u2014which dates cover the years of the Volunteer Fire Department. %u201dExcerpted from the Daily Ledger, Saturday Evening, August 30, 1902Fairview CemeteryFloyd Co.
