                                    85Governor Alvin P. HoveySometimes a large, heavy marker turned out to be difficult to transport. According to the June 8, 1893 Western Star, %u201cThe monument to be erected over the grave of our late Governor, Alvin P. Hovey, is now being transferred from the L&N depot to the Bellefontaine cemetery. One of the pieces, weighing seventeen tons, loaded on a wagon imported expressly for this purpose, and pulled by two traction engines, mired on Main Street about one square from the depot, Tuesday. The wagon went down to the hubs and it will take several days work to extricate it.%u201d The youngest of eight children, and an orphan at the age of 15, Hovey was a man with a remarkably varied career. After working as a bricklayer, teacher, and lawyer, he joined the military. During the Civil war, he served under Uylsses S. Grant, Lew Wallace, and William T. Sherman in Missouri, Kentucky, Tennessee, Arkansas, Mississippi, Indiana, and Georgia. During his 70 years of life, he was also an Indiana Supreme Court judge, a U.S. district attorney, a U.S minister to Peru, as well as a U.S. Congressman.
