53Caddy NaugleWhenever master stonecarver John Naugle came home from work, his young daughter Caddy would meet him at the gate to their yard. So, when John neared home one day and she wasn%u2019t there, he knew something was amiss. As he entered the house, he learned that Caddy was sick. Sadly, she died a few days later. According to local legend, John was so distraught that he lost interest in his work, and many of his duties were taken over by an itinerant stone mason who just happened to be passing through town. This fellow worked diligently to complete John%u2019s regular projects, and also took the time to carve this life-size monument of Caddy, standing at the gate waiting for her daddy. Then he disappeared, as mysteriously as he had arrived and, to this day, no one knows his name.Crown Hill CemeteryWashington Co. (297-08)
