ReligiousFor the purposes of this book, I%u2019ve distinguished between angels and other religious figures, such as Jesus, Mary, and Joseph (either singly or as a family) and various apostles, saints, and clergy. Crucifixions are common, with larger, life-sized versions often in the centers of Roman Catholic cemeteries. Most are carefully crafted of marble or limestone, but others are cast of metal, or even molded of fiberglass. Sometimes, small weather-worn stone crucifixes mark individual graves. There are also depictions of Jesus kneeling in prayer or standing with a hand raised in blessing. Mary is also a popular figure, usually with welcoming, outstretched arms, or holding the baby Jesus. All these statues vary in style, with some being traditional, familiar representations, while others are wonderfully unique interpretations by artisans interested in showing honor in their own special way. These are the ones I%u2019m most drawn to because they are so unexpected. St. Joseph%u2019s CemeteryVanderburgh Co. (349-11)St. Joseph%u2019s CemeteryVanderburgh Co.
