                                     Adhesive-backed luggage label of Lake Central Airlines.In 1940, aviation pioneer, air racer, and decorated World War I hero, Roscoe Turner founded Roscoe Turner Aeronautical Corporation to fly a charter service between Detroit and Memphis, using single engine Stinson airplanes. In 1948, Turner began serving cities in Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, and Illinois as a local carrier, and soon after renamed his company Turner Airlines, Inc.AM-88 served more Indiana cities than any other route, and was awarded to Turner Airlines in 1949, which acquired two DC-3s and three all-aluminum Beech Bonanzas. The Bonanzas were used for shorter runways. The first AM-88 air-mail flight was between Indianapolis and Grand Rapids. Turner%u2019s DC-3s had %u201cLake Central Route%u201d written down the side of the aircraft. In 1950 Turner Airlines was renamed Lake Central Airlines, Inc., which merged with Allegheny Airlines in 1968.
