This map shows the eastern routes.After the Air Mail Scandal, United Airlines was awarded the AM-1 contract to deliver mail over a transcontinental route from New York City to Oakland, California. It covered total of 2,732 miles, and encompassed most of the routes previously flown by CAM-17 and CAM-18. United started service on May 8, 1934 with three daily flights between New York and Chicago, and two flights daily between Chicago and Oakland. A stop in South Bend, Indiana was added with almost no notice on December 1, 1941. And a stop at Fort Wayne, Indiana was added on November 1, 1947.
