Stephen Anderson, M-1b, Red.Anderson printed the same design for this stamp in three different colors: red, black, and brown.Charles Stephen Anderson was a successful cachet producer for 47 years, working in West Orange, NJ from 1932 to 1965, and in Northern California from 1965 to 1979. Born in Harrisburg, PA in 1896, he attended Technical High School, and later graduated from Gettysburg College in 1919 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. In 1932, Anderson created a Commemorative Stamp Map of the U.S. showing the location and information about the event being honored. Two-thousand copies were sold. Since he was otherwise unemployed at the time, he decided to try his hand at producing cachets for First day Covers, releasing his first in 1933 for the 3-cent Georgia Bicentennial stamp. After Anderson obtained an engineering job, H. Wallace Ilsley began processing and mailing cachets for him%u2014until Ilsley went off to serve in World War II. That%u2019s when Athol Cliff took over the operation. When Anderson retired from his engineering job, he continued to use Cliff until he, too, retired. At that point, Gladys Adler began processing his cachets, which she continued to do until Anderson%u2019s death. His last cachet was created for the 15-cent Martin Luther King stamp, issued on January 13, 1979.C. Stephen Anderson, Cachet Designer
