                                    A Century of Progress %u2022 Vintage PostcardsDominican Republic ExhibitThe Dominican Republic occupies the greater part of the island formerly referred to as Hispanolia, which was the scene of the first European settlement in the new world, having been discovered by Columbus on December 5, 1492. The republic occupies an area of 19,325 square miles, with a population of 1,342,752. The government is democratic and representative in form. The president is General Rafael Leonidas Trujillo Molina, who is actively promoting the peace and progress of the nation. Principal products are sugar, cacao, tobacco, coffee, corn, fruit and fine woods.(On Front)Columbus Memorial LightTo be erected on the coast of the Dominican Republic, near the city of Santo Domingo, from plans submitted by J.L. Gleve of England, in a world-wide architectural competition. Endorsed by the Pan American Conferences and the League of Nations, the memorial will be erected through the contributions of Governments and peoples of all the world.
