BBBBA Century ofProgress %u25a0 Postcards %u25a0Western Photogravure Co.%u25a0 Partial Set %u25a0The Western Photogravure Company was founded on August 8, 1907 in Chicago by Joseph Shoeninger, George J. Kreutzer, and Frank Nickerson. While it manufactured a variety of printed products, it specialized in the photogravure process which utilized an acid-etched copper intaglio plate to reproduce the detailed, continuous tones of photographs.An April 1922 advertisement by the company in Printers%u2019 Ink Monthly praised their products%u2019 high quality: %u201cWestern Photogravure reproductions are almost identical with original dull finish photographs. No compromising half-tone screen mars the richness of the camera%u2019s work, and no shiny stock mirrors light. Photographs, wash, oil and line drawings are applicable to photogravure. And in many cases it is less expensive than ordinary printing for Sales Manuals%u2014Car Cards%u2014Inserts%u2014Dealer Display and numerous other uses. Compare for yourself....Photogravure is not Rotogravure.%u201d Western Photogravure%u2019s black-and-white Century of Progress postcards are particularly attractive. Some of these images are attributed Chicago Architectural Photo%u2014a firm that was organized in the 1880s to document the city%u2019s reconstruction after the Great Chicago Fire. %u2756
