Signed by William K. Schrage and Robert J. Jones, both of the Bureau of Engraving and Printing. Schrage designed and modeled the Jupiter stamp to render it suitable for engraving, and Jones did the actual engraving. This is a misperforation, often known as a perforation shift. In this case, the perforations are shifted horizontally by approximately 3 millimeters, with the likely cause being a misalignment of the sheet of stamps in relation to the perforating equipment. Imperfect stamps like these are supposed to be destroyed by the Post Office. Some collectors consider them oddities or freaks, while others specialize in them. The back of this stamp is printed with a reversed image. This occurs when a sheet of paper is missed during the printing process, and the inked roller transfers its ink to a secondary roller which deposits that ink on the back of the next sheet. This is considered a minor error. This stamp has a precancel from Beverly Shores, Indiana. Such stamps are canceled before being used, typically with two bars, and the city and state where they were mailed. Precanceled stamps were generally used by bulk-mail customers who would pre-sort their mail in order to receive a lower postage rate. This was likely precanceled as a favor by a postal employee for a collector.
