In philately, an Essay is the artwork for a proposed postage stamp, while a Photo Essay is that artwork presented on photographic paper, as are these two. The smaller version depicts an image of the Jupiterstamp as it was produced%u2014although in black-and-white. It was provided by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing for use by the media. The larger one differs in two main aspects. On the left side, it has the words First Flight, rather than Lafayette, Ind., and on the right side it has a square rather than a star. It represents the design that was not approved, and it is stamped Not Used on the reverse.
