He was a curator at the Cleveland Museum of Natural History, and a zoology professor at Ohio State University, before joining Ashland College as a professor of biology. His interest in croquet led him to collect nearly 1,000 books and publications on the subject%u2014and to operate a small private press, Rhodopress Publications, to reprint nine pamphlets on croquet.
