Not all notable aviation events in Indiana have been commemorated philatelically. Here, Octave Chanute tests one of his three biplane gliders at the Indiana Dunes in 1896.Event covers are stamped and cancelled envelopes that often have a decorative cachet. They are generally created to celebrate a particular occasion or note an anniversary. Their cachets typically explain what is being commemorated, the date of the event, and often contain an illustration. Usually, the stamps relate to the celebration, and for large events there may be a special cancellation. First Day Covers, Highway Post Office covers, and covers created on the inauguration day of a president, are all considered event covers.Aviation event covers are a sub-category of event covers. The American Air Mail Society (AAMS) lists many such covers in its catalogs. Types include First Flight Covers, Airport Dedication Covers, National Air Mail Week Covers, Zeppelin Covers, covers related to Charles Lindbergh, and Space Covers. This is a fairly eclectic collection of aviation-related covers. Most bear air-mail stamps, and all have Indiana cancellations. The majority relate to actual aviation events, but some mark other occasions that were important enough to send via air mail. None fall into the usual AAMS categories. Instead, they were created for air shows, air meets, and air races, as well as speaking engagements, visits by noted aviators, and other newsworthy local events. In several cases, particularly for multi-day events, the color of the ink used for the cachet was changed each day, and many of those variations are included here.
